Scanners are expensive. Most have so many adapters and run you through so many screens it takes a lot of effort to learn and then to maneuver your way to the data you need. I bought this scanner because it was affordable. I bought this scanner mainly for its enhanced data functionality. However, after activating the GM Enhanced Data I found out that it was still not able to display some of the enhanced data such as CAM Retard, which is what I needed to set the distributor on by GM Vehicle. The standard features worked good, fast communication between scanner and vehicle, and you can clear codes without having to shut the engine down (cheaper scanners force you to have the engine off to reset the fault codes). ......

I bought this scanner in April the frist truck I used it on was 1999 Chevy with vortec 454 we just rebulit the motor and needed to set the timming. The timming is controled by the pcm but you need to set the cam sensor , crank sensor off set by rotating the dist. to achive close to zero degree as you can . Installed AutoXray ax7000 went to data list found timming degree on list it was 7493 degrees this is not an good number because there is only 360 degrees on a camshaft . Called AutoXray warran......

My new Code Scout arrived today & I spent an hour trying to get it to work. It easily connects just fine but cannot read at all. Tech support went though the process with me as I tried several more times & finally said to send it back for replacement (At MY expense!) I bought this tool because it says it works on all cars 1996 and newer. It does not allow me to select Mercedes from it's list. My two cars each showed a code on the scanner with no explanation of their meaning. The AutoXray web site code lookup did not have a listing for either code. The computer tech help form failed to go through after several attempts. I was on the phone line for quite a while without talking to a person, so I gave up. I do not know ......

This tool is very easy to use. Plug it into the interface, start the car and press "read" and in seconds it returns your malfunction code. The description of the error code is displayed right on the screen saving you from having to try to find out what the code means. By fixing the car myself, I saved enough to pay for this scanner.

Overall the CodeScout 1500 is good for trouble shooting on your own. It is not Mac compatible for the PC connection kit. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because it does not reset the engine maintenance lights. So if you change your own oil this tool will not turn off the change oil light on your car.

What is not included in prior reviews is the need for a shop manual for your specific vehicle in combination with this scanner. The scanner will provide the trouble codes, but you will need a manual to locate the faulty units (sensors, etc.), and the how-to instructions for replacing faulty units. Another reviewer said the dealer found 8 DTC codes but the CodeScout only showed 2. The MFR's website description (http://www.autoxray.com/product_detail.php?pid=92) says the CodeScout (only) reads and displays generic DTCs (not manufacturer specific DTC's). It will however erase both generic and manufacturer specific DTC's. So if you want to read custom DTC's for you make/model, you'll need the AutoXray 1500 instead of the 700 (and pay 2x the price).

This product is a good buy. It has a nice easy to read screen, easy to use and comes with a through manual. It all the adapters to test all the cars I have worked on so far. It also comes with a very nice carrying case. The only draw back is that it can not read codes while the car is running. Other than that it is a great buy.
